Our Founder

Carmel Tillekeratne

Founder, Pagoda Montessori School
1962 - 2015

A little over 60 years ago, Carmel Tillekeratne, a qualified AMI Diploma holder had a vision to open a Montessori school of her own, determined to make it a second home to children in her neighborhood. In 1962, with just six students, she embarked on this journey by founding the AMI Montessori School of Pagoda, adjacent to her own home. In 1991 the school was renamed as Pagoda Montessori School.

Pagoda Montessori School of today, continues to be a second home to many children and is the result of her persistence and commitment. The road was not always easy to travel, but Carmel was determined to make the school succeed, and her role as the school's Founder and sole Directress from its inception in 1962 until her demise in early 2015, created a solid foundation on which the school has been able to build ever since. Carmel was a very special and kind person who gave her all for the wellbeing of everyone connected with the school. Her philosophy on life was reflected by the students that passed through the school and it continues to be upheld in Pagoda Montessori School of today. Because of her vision and determination, it stands as a spectacular model of quality education for many students in our neighborhood, today.

Dedication, determination, resolve, fortitude, loyalty and her utmost faith in God defined Carmel during the decades she served Pagoda Montessori School. Virtually every staff member and parent knew of Carmel’s intensity and strength, which were evident daily, and particularly when she was faced with any kind of a challenge. In every way, she believed to the depth of her being that the success of Pagoda Montessori School was worth fighting for.

She lived her years sustained by a strength that few are blessed to have in their lives. She was an inspiration in countless ways. All those who knew and loved her miss her mightily. As Pagoda Montessori School continues its journey from one generation to another, its strength and distinction going forward will undoubtedly reflect the contributions and influences made by her.

We mourn the loss of a visionary leader, to whom we owe the existence of our school and community.

As we continue to live her  legacy each day at Pagoda Montessori School, we invite you to join us in any way you are inspired.

The Joy you’ve brought us over the years…..

I've lived a life that's full. I've traveled each and every highway; and more,

much more than this, I did it my way.
